Why don't I have a plastic lettuce knife?

Probably because I never heard of one.  Duh.  The Rich Life on a Budget had a great post on keeping fresh veggies and such cut up and ready to go in the fridge so we wouldn't be so tempted to grab the chip bag when we were hungry.

In the com-box the discussion turned to salad spinners, an item that I thought was the height of silliness until a friend showed me how hers worked.  After buying a cheap one that broke posthaste, I invested in an Oxo salad spinner, which actually costs less now then when I bought mine.  It was one of the best investments I ever made.

Frequent commenter, LRS2Amanda,  gave a hearty thumbs-up to the Oxo salad spinner and then said, "I also bought this serrated plastic knife that cuts the lettuce without turning it brown if prepping ahead."

Whaaaaaaat?  A special knife for lettuce?  I must look into this.  I headed to Amazon, and there it was.  Cool.  I need one of those.  Last time I bought three heads of Romaine at Costco, I got the bright idea to cut it all up and put it in individual two serving plastic bags.  Honestly - I KNEW BETTER.  Within a very short time all the lettuce was brown and yucky.  What was I thinking?????  Generally I tear my lettuce but with Romaine, the lettuce gods demand it be chopped up with a knife - or something.

And look - it's lime green. How cool is that?

How many of you have a salad knife??

Adrienne,

I did not know that lettuce knives existed either. The reason I go through the process of washing and rolling whole leaves in paper towels or flour sacks is because I want the lettuce to stay fresh and crisp after washing. I'll be interested to hear what you think once you test drive your green plastic knife. Linda (LRS4Amanda) is one smart cookie with lots of good tips - so it's likely a good investment.
I'm starting to think Linda needs to start her own blog!

Adrienne,

Glad you found it because the brand was not on the knife. (I looked) Mine is hot pink!

Oh, and I just read your comments and believe me, if I had a blog it would be very boring. But thanks for the compliments! My husband keeps saying just wait, you are going to have a blog soon too and I just laugh.

But seriously, I have learned quite a few things from reading blogs. That is what is so great about them. Plus the social connection, especially on the days that I am at home, I don't feel so isolated! :)

I admire all of you bloggers for not only taking the time to do it but the fact that you can actually think of things to blog about!

Hi...this knife looks very interesting. I think I might just get one, if for nothing else but the color.(-: Incidently, I am a daylily lover too - they are such wonderful, carefree plants. Are many of yours rebloomers...do you do mail order? Most of mine have come from John Schustra a California grower, you might know of him.(-:

I don't have a lettuce knife but am a sucker for oxo products, and the green would match my kitchen perfectly :-)

I had a salad knife many years ago. I got it at a Tupperware party where they had games and gave out little gadgets when you win. I found I never used it and lost/gave it away a long time ago. I wonder what are the advantages of using one of these versus tearing the lettuce? Also, would a good quality plastic knife serve the same purpose? I just noticed that it's large, larger than the one I owned. Is that the advantage?

Susan - I had never heard of such a thing. First time for everything...

La Vie Quotidienne - I do primarily mail order. I use to sell almost exclusively on ebay but their fees are so high now, I'm looking at other options. Almost all of mine are re-blommers. I looked up John Schustra's gardens. He has quite a large place and a nice selection.

MM - I'm the best thing that ever happened to you (besides Sub, of course! ;-)

Sara Louise - they're do dang cheap - why not?

Cherie - Tearing is just as good and it's what I usually do, except for Romaine which for some reason I feel impelled to slice up with a knife.

I think the lettuce knife would be faster and the lettuce would end up more uniform. I think a regular plastic knife would be too serrated and too small.
